Champagne and Fromage, Covent Garden

Champagne and Fromage is one of the latest additions to Covent Garden’s list of eateries – in an area increasingly hailed as the ‘new Soho’ for all its fashionable and popular redevelopment.

As a Champagne shop, bar and bistro, Champagne and Fromage fits well into this area’s image of being a sleek new foodie destination, yet the no fuss, warm and welcoming ambience inside eradicates any potential for stuffiness or pretence.

Champagne + Fromage

This, however, doesn’t mean there is any less focus on quality. All the grower champagnes served at Champagne and Fromage are sourced by the owners from award-winning family owned producers, meaning that the resulting operation is a happy, stylish but informal setting for enjoying some of France’s most iconic produits gastronomiques, either on or off the premises.

“Our aim is to import a good collection [of champagne] to represent every style available” so says Maud Fierobe one of the owners and founders. Her passion for this project is self-evident, and underlying this is a desire to gently educate her customers.

“Champagne is a wine and we want to get people thinking of it in that way. It’s much more versatile than people often think. That’s why we don’t list still wine. If we did, people would order that instead, which would completely defeat the point.”

Champagne + Fromage

To add impetus to this, Maud and team have come up with a menu to complement their range of Champagnes, with delicious tartines (try La Nordique for beautifully pink, beetroot marinated salmon gravlax, a langues cheese mousse, salad leaves and their secret recipe champagne dressing) and charcuterie: peppery Corsican cured meat and French saussicon and salami.

In addition, Maud has her own dedicated ‘cheeseman’ who will deftly craft cheeseboards from a wide variety of mouth-watering cheeses – all beautifully displayed along French Bubble’s back wall. Like the champagnes, many of these are also hand-sourced directly from the producers.

Gooey Gaugry Epoisse along with their French blue goat’s cheese, and an interesting chilli and rosemary encrusted soft Corsican cheese are just a couple that keep their clientèle coming back for more.

Of course, the main draw at Champagne and Fromage is the bubbles, divided into Classic Brut Non Vintage, Blanc de Blancs Non Vintage (all 100% Chardonnay), increasingly popular Blanc de Noirs Non Vintage (100% pinot noir), Brut Rose, Extra Dry and Demi-sec, and Vintage.

Highlights include the interestingly decorated bottles by Waris Larmandier – try the Cuvee Collection Grand Cru (French bubbles is the only UK importer of this now infamous producer – one of only a few houses also legally allowed to use pinot blanc in their blends); Michel Furdyna’s Blanc de Noirs Champagne La Loge 2002, and his brut Rose that goes exceptionally well with charcuterie.

Other notable ones are the La-croix cuvee demie-sec (an unusual blend of 70% pinot meunier) and the Champagne Colin Cuvee Alliance – a producer name that is making itself more and more commonplace on people’s champagne wishlists. Tailored champagne and cheese tastings are arranged each month for £40 a person. Ask your concierge for details.

No 35 Restaurant at The Hempel

By Frances Cottrell

In a leafy setting, a beautiful collection of traditional Georgian townhouses hides a modern hotel gem: The Hempel.

We began the evening with a cocktail served in the idyllic gardens by an incredibly charming barman. Filled to the brim with alcoholic fruits, dinner started with a bang. We were then led through the very modern, minimalist hotel to the restaurant, No. 35 Restaurant at The Hempel.

The restaurant itself is small and intimate, although the room appears to have two distinct personalities with one area lit in pink with more of a party feel, opposed to the naturally lit, windowed area in keeping with the architecture you expect from the building. This was definitely my preferred spot, although depending on your group, you may want to try either.

The website boasts a ‘high pedigree provenance offer[ing] the best of British and European ingredients’ and a chat with Head Chef Mike Carter certainly seals this as authentic. He is passionate about his suppliers, and goes to great lengths to ensure that the lives of the stock he serves are as close to perfection as possible.

We started with Heirloom tomato salad and Scallops, which were abundant in colour and prettiness. They were delicious, and very clean dishes, leading on well to the much more macho main courses. The star of the show was undeniably the Welsh Grain Poussin served both poached and confit with the depth of flavour in the meat signalling Carter’s passionate and skilled sourcing. The Rump of Rhug Estate Lamb was beautifully cooked and a succulent, juicy cut on a fresh bed of spring veg.

Puds were good, although not having a sweet tooth means I lean towards cheese and crackers every time, and the selection on offer at The Hempel was delicious, with a creative selection of accompaniments. A luxuriant truffle honey was a beautiful finale to a rather elegant and accomplished meal.

The Hempel is a great space, where quality and passion shine through the drinks and the food, and if you get a sunny day and can enjoy the gardens too, it’s a space which would be hard to beat.

Avenue Restaurant, St James’s

By Frances Cottrell

Like many of the D&D Group’s restaurants, Avenue is a big, table-clothed, classic, fine dining style of restaurant. In that lovely part of St James’s towards Pall Mall, it’s an expansive space with light streaming in through a high, windowed ceiling, which can sometimes, understandably, feel a little empty and lacking in atmosphere.

The décor is suited to the area but there are elements of flair which are now a little dated (splashes of dramatic red orchids in an almost totally white design) and when we dined there was a fairly out-of-character display of art on the walls as part of a temporary exhibition. But, that all aside, we were seated in a mezzanine level overlooking the grand bar and restaurant in a very comfortable spot, which I’d certainly recommend if visiting.

Avenue Restaurant

The menu is a selection of seasonal dishes one has learnt to expect in a restaurant erring slightly on the masculine corporate side, and flavours are gutsy and strong to suit the suits. A starter of English asparagus, which surely is a crime not to serve in early June, was delicious and scallops were plump and beautifully caramelised. The apple served with them lacked a bit of bite and could have added some acidity to cut through the fatty pancetta.

Mains were a choice of fish, pork belly, steaks and a token vegetarian risotto or pasta, and my guest and I both went for fish. Large portions of well-cooked turbot and sea bass were really rather good and this was the course which stole the show. The fish was perfectly pan-fried on both occasions, and the balance of seasoning just right.

Clearly the sourcing is very important to this restaurant, and it certainly shines through in the quality of cuts served. Simple but very pleasant accompaniments of spinach and man-sized chips complimented the dishes too.

A shared pudding of rhubarb crumble was a lovely end to the meal, and served with an icy cold Muscat rounded things off rather marvellously.

Avenue is pleasant, and at times, very good. It’s one to have in the back of your mind for a business lunch or an early supper and you’d certainly have a good time with no disappointment.
