The wave of casual dining with an American accent is still spreading through London like wildfire, and there are some establishments who seem to have a little more individuality and conviction to the cause, and this pub is certainly one of them.
The North Pole is a pub which looks totally authentic old-London town, and as such, is perfect to house such a macho dining revolution: junk food, eaten ironically. Their Carnivore Tuesdays speak volumes about the audiences here, with a straightforward steak, ribs or burger choice, served alongside beer: nothing more, nothing less.
Without the contrived feel of a ‘theme’ restaurant, The North Pole still manages to surround you in cheer. Friendly and knowledgeable staff talked us through the plethora of beers and ciders, even offering matching notes to help us with our food choices. There are 22 draught, 30 bottles and 10 beers on pump to choose from, each with a distinctive characteristic, and each from an independent brewery.
Food is simple and comforting, and perfect for birthday parties, fun weekend nights out, or just a simple home-comfort dinner mid-week with an old friend.
We opted for a huge selection of starters, sides and sliders as we wanted to try a bit of everything. Scotch eggs were served with unctuous gooey yolks and a crisp, home-made casing. Pork scratchings were frighteningly large sheets of golden, porky crispness, and smoked salmon was refreshing served on heavy rye bread with sharp capers.
The sliders were enormous. Like, deep-South, Man Vs Food enormous, and cheese and bacon burger, pulled pork and falafel were all great. Ask the staff for a selection and try all three with your group. The home-made buns, perfectly toasted, and the moist, shredded BBQ pulled pork were real highlights.
There’s a garden, which despite the rain, still looked appealing. This is a cracking little pub, serving honestly sourced ales and food, perfect if you’re in the mood to dress down and eat casually.
