Northbank Restaurant and Bar – A Hidden Gem For The Summer

When the sun comes out in London, it can be tricky to grab a seat on an outdoor terrace. That is unless you’re privy to any of the hidden gems of the city. One such spot is Northbank, a restaurant and bar located along the Thames near St Paul’s.

It has a nice sized outdoor terrace that was perfect for a sunny summer evening. And then the view! Northbank sits on the ground floor of a residential building with offices behind it, and a stunning view of the Thames and Millennium Bridge in front of it.

Northbank has an impressive list of cocktails to sip on whilst watching the sun set. If you fancy moving inside for dinner, they have a large dining room suitable for larger groups and smaller, more intimate booths for two, all with views of the Thames.

The menu is almost entirely seasonal which means it has changed between my visit and this review being published, but you can count on a selection of modern British dishes with Cornish influences courtesy of head chef Jason Marchant.

I start my meal with a fresh Crab Salad and celeriac remoulade while my guest enjoys the Hog Pudding paired with saffron leeks and mushroom ravioli. It’s a tad heavy for a starter but it tastes good, so it’s easily forgiven.

Mains consist of the pan-fried Cornish cod and rump of lamp with sweet bread, both rich and well-executed. A special mention to the truffle mash paired with the lamb.

However, dessert is definitely the highlight. My guest orders the chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream, while I go with the manager’s recommendation: the Glazed Lemon and Mead Crème Brûlée that comes along with a small jug of maple syrup to pour on top.

While it’s not for the faint of heart – and if you are able to finish it after two courses, I commend you – it is absolutely worth ordering when it’s on the menu.

We opted to have paired wines with our courses but they have a great selection of bottles starting at an extremely reasonable £16.00.

Perhaps the best part about Northbank, aside from the lovely terrace and heavenly Crème Brûlée, is that when you eventually emerge from dinner or drinks, you’re greeted with an even more breathtaking view than when you entered.

To make a reservation at Northbank, please email your concierge. Bon Vivant’s members and guests will receive a complimentary glass of champagne when dining in the restaurant.
