Poolside Dos and Don'ts – How to Optimise Your Pool Time this Summer

Have you ever wondered where’s best to sit around the pool when on holiday? No? Well, you really should think about it.

Whether it’s maximising your view, getting a straight run to the bar or being perfectly positioned to be checked out by others, here are some tips on how to optimize your pool time this Summer.

Where to sit by the pool?

1. Tip your barman on day one. Never make the mistake of thanking him when you leave – a tip on the first day will make sure you get topped up more often.

2. Pick a lounger that will get the sun for the length of the day. Nobody wants to wake up from a siesta with one tanned arm and the other a lighter shade of pale.

3. Scour the poolside on day one. Imitate the holiday professionals – they don’t mess around with shade time.

4. Where is the bar? Where is the best eye-line to the bar? Sit one seat to the side of this spot. You’ll always get prompt service, but you are sufficiently far away that you’re not in danger of having the pointy side of a cocktail umbrella land in your lap.

5. If you have sensitive British skin, ensure you sandwich your loungers in between two umbrellas. Throughout the day you’ll have the option of shade whenever you need it.

6. Sit in direct line to the entry/exit points of the water to make sure you don’t miss any James Bond (Daniel Craig or Halle Berry) style entrances or exits. But, always remember to avoid the front row so you’re not caught unaware by a stray cannonball.

7. Sitting near the deep end increases splash risk. Sitting near the shallow end increases exposure to stray children. Seat yourself accordingly.

8. Pick the best view of the landscape as even if the crowd doesn’t live up to expectations, you’ll still have something to Instagram.

9. Never sit in direct eye line of unwanted romantic propositions. The moment this happens, upgrade to the impenetrable sunglasses.

10. If your perfect position isn’t available, make it happen. Confidently stride around the pool creating your perfect configuration in the direction you require with available beds. If you’ve tipped the barman, he will quickly see your strategy and should jump to your side to help.

11. Depending on your sensibilities or nosiness sit, or don’t sit, anywhere near the jacuzzi section. You’ll be implicated in the action by sheer proximity. Absolutely not.

Note: Obviously make sure you are properly covered in sunscreen and don’t drink too much around the pool!
