The Month Ahead – May 2014

Here we look ahead to the new openings and events to keep on your radar for May 2014. From a wild new opening at Claridge’s to new sky-high restaurants in The Shard and Tower 42 and another London opening, this time at the Bulgari hotel, for super-chef, Alain Ducasse.

Fera at Claridge’s

Simon Rogan’s hotly anticipated new restaurant, Fera, will open at Claridge’s on 6 May. Fera comes from the Latin for ‘wild’, which is reflected in the menu’s seasonal ingredients and the influence of nature in the dishes.

The restaurant will have 90 covers and a private dining room seating 12.

Sakura at Sake No Hana, St James’s

Sakura at Sake no Hana

Celebrate spring at Sake No Hana’s pop-up cherry blossom garden, Sakura, until 19 May. In line with the Japanese tradition that rejoices in the fleeting cherry blossom season, you can feast on sushi and sake beneath the trees without the need for a long haul flight.

City Social

The City

Jason Atherton is making his foray into sky high dining with his latest venture opening this month on the 24th floor of Tower 42 affording impressive views of the Capital’s major landmarks.

The 90-cover City Social will have an Art Deco design and creative yet simple dishes that showcase the best of British produce, and the City Social bar will be serving prohibition-inspired cocktails.

Ting at The Shangri-La Hotel

The Shard

Tīng (Chinese for ‘living room’) is the name of the restaurant and lounge on level 35 of the Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard, adding to London’s ever-growing list of restaurants with a view.

The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring a ‘modern European menu with a hint of Asian flavouring’.

Pavilion

Kensington High Street

Pavilion is a restaurant, champagne bar and deli by acclaimed chef Adam Simmonds that will open on 30 May. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and take-away salads, sandwiches and snacks, Pavilion will serve modern dishes created from seasonal British produce in Kensington.

Opso

Marylebone

Opso is a celebration of traditional and modern Greek food, opening in Marylebone at the end of the month. Opso will serve freshly baked good for breakfast, an all-day menu including the likes of grilled grouper and squid ink buns and brunch on the weekends.

Toto’s

Knightsbridge

Toto’s, a ‘sophisticated Italian restaurant and bar’, is set to open this month in Knightsbridge. Serving simple yet refined Italian dishes, there will be an extensive wine list and Italian-inspired cocktails. There is an intimate hidden courtyard for al fresco dining as we head into the summer months.

Rivea

Knightsbridge

Opening in the Bulgari Hotel and Residences, Rivea is brought to you by Alain Ducasse, whose protégé Damien Leroux will be heading up the kitchen.

Rivea London

Rivea will be serving small plates inspired by the flavours and vibrant colours of the Italian and Provençal markets visited by Ducasse over the years.

The Strand Dining Rooms

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar square will welcome The Strand Dining Rooms restaurant this month (well, it looks like it will now open in June), an all-day dining restaurant that will service traditional and contemporary British food. Wine will be a focal point, with an extensive list devised by the in-house wine team and specialist suppliers.

With the interior based on that of a traditional Pullman coach, The Strand Dining rooms will bring an interesting twist to British dining.

Plum + Spilt Milk

I had a lovely dinner at Plum + Spilt Milk a few weeks ago – a menu of classic British dishes created under the direction of Mark Sargeant at the Great Northern Hotel in King’s Cross (click here for the menu).

Mention Bon Vivant Concierge when booking to receive a complimentary glass of prosecco upon arrival at Plum + Spilt Milk, available for bookings of up to 6 people.
