Sticks ’n’ Sushi Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf’s growing restaurant scene continues apace with the recent opening of the Danish owned Japanese restaurant, Sticks ’n’ Sushi – now its fourth location in London.

Our Review of Sticks ’n’ Sushi Canary Wharf

Situated at the base of the new Crossrail building, designed by Norman Foster, the strong structural lines of London’s Docklands are echoed in the dark wood and leather fixtures of the restaurant’s interior.

The large generous space allows for an open kitchen with a 23 metre bar running along it. Soft lighting and textiles have been cleverly used to create depth and contrast. This is a chic restaurant which feels at home in this distinctly urban environment.

The evening we visit is not long after opening and the place is bustling – couples, groups of friends, the expected business clientèle and the post work crowd. It’s buzzy and relaxed.

The soy cured salmon is such a beautiful colour that I want to immediately find a dress to match. It’s topped with a refreshingly zingy red onion, shiitake, dill & miso mustard dressing.

The beef takai is a standout dish, with a nutty soy roasted almond dressing contrasting wonderfully with the tender meat.

The topped rolls in a whole range of fried centres were a revelation. We tried the tempura shrimp as well as the black cod.

There are of course the ‘sticks’ too, a kind of kebab style offering. I’d choose the black cod and other seafood options rather than what felt like a rather out of context bacon and cheese.

The quality of the ingredients stands out in everything, and the fish and meat is all responsibly sourced. And if you can’t decide what to have, they can, as the menus are very detailed and helpfully offer 14 set menus options.

Tip: The Canary Wharf branch is also the first to offer breakfast, no doubt given its location in a busy business district. Happily open-minded in its approach, the breakfast menu offers everything from your coffee and pastry through to a rice soup or quinoa roll.
