The Strand Dining Rooms

The Strand Dining Rooms is now overseen by chef Mark Sargeant.

In its enviable position, the clientèle appear to visit the Strand Dining Rooms for the cocktails: the classy, dark-wood panelled bar seems to be the only appropriate place now to dissect the intricacies of artwork you have just admired at the neighbouring National and National Portrait Galleries, or simply a chance to unwind with views of the surrounding grandiose architecture at a pace that matches the time it took to build it.

Classic Negronis come well recommended, or perhaps try the Guv’nor or a Nelsons Collins for something a little more exciting.

We were also tempted by the Rhubarb Mezcal Margarita, with heady bar snacks like pork croquettes, and spice black pudding balls to help whet the appetite.

At the Strand Dining Rooms, diners can enjoy a British brasserie style menu that offers up classics and seasonally changing dishes, as well as offering their own signature creations that include a seafood scotch egg, and seafood crumble.

We went for the lamb special cooked with sweet potato puree and octopus croquettes. We washed it down with a happily chosen bottle of Vietti Tre Vigne Barbera d’Asti which worked beautifully with the juices in the meat.

The wine list here is well priced and is predominantly Italian and French focused, offering choices from wine partners Bibendum Wines, Corney & Barrow, Flint Wines and Decorum Vintners.

Friendly staff will happily help you choose what to match to your dinner accordingly.

Designed by Russell Sage Studios, we sat ensconced in a cavernous leather-clad booth just far enough away from other diners so as not to hear their conversation, but near enough to not feel out on a limb.

The place as a whole feels a little like nearby Bob Bob Ricard, but unfortunately without the quality of the food or atmosphere.
