The Club Hotel and Spa Jersey

The Club Hotel and Spa is a boutique hotel located in the capital of Jersey, St. Helier.  With an unassuming location on a quiet side street, The Club Hotel combines the sensibility of a five star business hotel and a host of amenities for the leisure traveller.

This dual identity is reflective of the island itself – a little piece of Britain off the French coast, which is brimming with British traditions and French savoir faire.

The Club Hotel has a clean, modern design – the muted tones that abound in the lobby are punctuated by colourful rugs – and the bedrooms are designed with similar neutral tones and clean lines.

As its full name might suggest, The Club Hotel has a full service spa with swimming pool, sauna and steam room, and a number of treatment rooms for both one and two persons.

On sunnier and warmer days, there is also an outdoor garden and pool set in lush surroundings for those looking to work on their suntan.

The Club Hotel and Spa offers a terrace area overlooking the town to unwind with an alfresco cocktail before heading down to the restaurant for dinner. The restaurant holds one Michelin star and is one of the top dining spots on the island.

Given the restaurant’s reputation, we opted for the tasting menu from chef Steve Smith who recently took over the running of the kitchen.

While the bar area and what sounded like bizarre 90s dance music didn’t start the evening off on the best note, the restaurant itself exceeded expectations: the food was delicious and service was friendly, attentive and unobtrusive.

Menu highlights included scallops paired with smoked eel and truffle, and turbot on a bed of crumbled cauliflower with pickled grape, shrimp and sorrel – the turbot being an absolute triumph.

The town of St. Helier is on the hotel’s doorstep, ideal for an afternoon’s walk to poke around the shops, restaurants and cafés. We enjoyed a lovely lunch at Ormer, a stylish new restaurant from chef Shaun Rankin who previously operated the restaurant at The Club Hotel.

While Jersey might not seem a likely destination for a weekend break (unless depositing vast sums of money, of course), the short flight, warmer climate and burgeoning restaurant scene mean there’s much more to the island than offshore business and lower tax rates.
